Why You’re Not Losing Weight

Obesity is a big problem in the U.S. and elsewhere and many people are doing everything they can to try to lose weight. The problem comes when they are doing everything that they think they should be doing such as changing their diet, exercising, etc and for some reason they still are not losing weight.

There could be many reasons you are not losing weight from hitting a plateau in your routine to not getting enough sleep. One way to see if perhaps you are taking in “unknown” calories is to keep a food diary of everything you eat or drink for at least a week and see what is going into your body.

It’s possible you weren’t counting things like the two spoons of sugar you put in your coffee every morning or that after dinner martini. Every little calorie counts! Even that piece of sugarless gum has five or 10 calories and needs to be written down. Identifying thing like these are ways to help you to get back on track to lose weight like you desire.

Stress Keeps People From Losing Weight

Another factor that is high on the list of things that stop people from losing weight is stress. Even if someone is exercising or trying to stay on a diet, if there is a lot of stress in their lives their body may be producing too much of the stress hormone called cortisol. Cortisol causes the fat that forms around the middle of the body and it also makes you hungry for fattening products that are sugary or fat-filled.

If you determine that you are going through a very stressful period and it is causing a halt to your campaign to lose weight, then you need to find some stress reduction activities other than eating comfort foods. Some of these could include a nice hot cup of herbal tea, meditation, talking to a supportive friend or even getting counseling if need be.

Lake of Sleep Causes Weight Gain

Researchers at the University of Chicago confirmed that not getting enough sleep can cause a person to have problems losing weight and in fact can cause weight gain. This is due to the body becoming resistant to insulin and having less leptin and ghrelin in the body, which are hormones that tells the body it is full. It doesn’t take long for this problem to develop, as the study showed that even one night of getting less than four hours of sleep can start to cause problems with losing weight. It may also cause people to feel hungry, so they not only can’t sleep; they are also eating extra calories while they are awake. This is caused by cravings for sweet food or carbohydrates because the body is producing less serotonin and dopamine due to the lack of sleep.

Thyroid Disease Causes Inability to Lose Weight

Sometimes a condition such as thyroid disease causes a person not to be able to lose weight. This is due to the fact that thyroid problems lead to metabolism problems.

Medications may cause weight loss problems

Medications have also been at times the reasons people can’t lose weight. Some of the biggest culprits are medications like anti-depressants, birth control, diabetes medications, hormone medications, and more. If you suspect this to be the case, ask your doctor about the medications you take and if they may cause possible problems in losing weight.

Weight loss plateau stops weight loss

If a person has been on a campaign to lose weight and has been using the same workout routine for weeks or same diet for weeks, it is possible that your body has gotten used to this. This causes what is called a plateau situation where the weight loss stops and now you have to “shake things up” and change your current routine.

For instance, if you start using a different kind of exercise or switch the kind of diet that you are using to lose weight, it is quite possible that your plateau will end and you will begin to start losing weight once again.

Not eating enough causes weight loss problems

Believe it or not, both overeating and undereating can cause you to have weight issues. If your body thinks it is never going to get adequate food again due to you going on a very restrictive diet, it will go into a starvation mode and you won’t be able to lose weight. What you need to do is find out the minimum and maximum amount of calories you need to eat for your body type in order to properly go on a campaign to lose weight.

Fad Diets Are not Good for Losing Weight Consistently

If someone goes on what is considered to be a “fad diet” then it could cause problems losing weight because it is a temporary method and not something the dieter can survive on for long periods of time. The best kind of weight loss is top change your eating habits, not go on lose weight fast types of fad diets that could actually be dangerous, as well as fail to help you to lose weight.

In some cases these fad diets have someone eating lots of one type of food. This can also lead to gaining weight instead of losing weight. For instance, if someone only ate carbs, then that could lead to weight gain instead of losing weight.

Drinking too many high calorie liquids

You may also be drinking too many high calorie liquids. For instance, juices may be good for you, but they contain a lot of sugar and if you drink a lot of them, it can stop your campaign to lose weight. Other liquid culprits are things like non-diet sodas, sugary teas, lemonade, etc.

The bottom line is that if you are trying to lose weight, you need to determine what your everyday eating habits are, as well as your sleeping habits, and be sure that you are getting proper exercise and are not under a lot of stress if you want your weight loss efforts to be successful.
