Weight Loss for Women After Pregnancy
After being pregnant and going around looking like a bouncing ball for nine months, most women are eager to fit into their old clothes and start looking “normal” again. It is normal to still look pregnant three months after having your baby. Before you plunge into a rigorous weight loss regimen after you deliver your baby, remember that it took a span of nine months for your body to undergo many hormonal and physical changes and it will be very unreal to expect it to shrink back into its old size overnight.
Seeing and reading about how those Hollywood moms get back into their old shapes “so soon” after giving birth does not help us regular people much because we know we do not have the means like they have: personal trainers, home gym, personal chef, etc… If you are “most women” and do not have the support systems that these ladies do, then it is more realistic to know and to accept that it may take you a year before you can regain your old self. You have to realize that aiming to lose weight after pregnancy takes time. Your uterus, which expanded to accommodate your baby, will take about four weeks for it to contract to its normal size. The good news is, many women will shed off about 4 -10 kilos in the first two weeks after having the baby. The bones in the hip and pelvic areas will also need time before they can return to your pre-pregnancy state.
So you start asking yourself the question, what is the best way to lose weight? This question of weight loss after pregnancy is best addressed in consultation with your doctor and in consideration of the type of birthing that you had, whether you had a normal or a caesarean section delivery. You will probably need clearance from your medical practitioner before you can embark on an exercise regimen. Going on a starvation diet is not the best way to lose weight. But you should know that breastfeeding makes you lose the equivalent of 500 calories a day. This translates to 3,500 calories a week and you do the rest of the math. However, this precludes that you watch your diet and ensure that you give your body enough nutrition to support that fact that you are providing milk for your baby. Losing weight at the rate of more than one kilo a week may release toxins into your system that may end up in the milk that you baby gets from you. Another plus factor in favor of breastfeeding is it helps hasten the contraction of your uterus and shrink your abdomen.
Still, do not expect to see the effects of weight loss after pregnancy overnight. Following a program of light exercises is one of the best ways to lose weight after pregnancy. But with the demands of attending to the needs of a new baby, you will have to be creative at finding the time to exercise. Find the most expedient arrangements and schedule and stick to it. Get yourself and your home organized and set up a schedule that will incorporate exercising. Make sure that you keep your exercises simple, to split your work out times and to find a support system among your
friends, relatives or neighbors to enable you to do this.
Instead of going on a strict diet, concentrate on eating the right kind of foods. The weight loss after pregnancy will come when you eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, when you eat smaller portions of the other things you eat and only eating when you are hungry. It may not be easy to get out of the “eating for two” syndrome that you may have developed while pregnant.
